The symbolism portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird about the courthouse pillars shows how the justice system is built on the ideals of justice and morals but has been tarnished by the nineteenth century clock which shows the racism and prejudice in the southern states of America. As they describe the clock as rusty and unreliable because the ideas that the justice system is based on has been slurred to the advantage of slave owners and people of a white ethnicity. As this clock hasn’t been replaced and just has been let to rot influencing the rest of society and the building in this case.
When the book talks about how the concrete pillars can’t hold up the south roof as it is too heavy for their burden, I think it talking about that the old, morally justified fundamentals of the the justice system can’t take the load of the accepted racism which is strife. The reason the book talks about the south roof as it is representing the southern states which is racist but the north roof is fine as the north states are not racist. This is very significant as the south still wants slaves as the great depression has hit and they need people to work their lands but the north of america has abolished making it illegal making the situation for white people in the south even worse. This is also the reason for right wing groups and racism through America and Europe.
My conclusion is that the court house represents the imbalance and struggle between Northern and Southern States of America where the north has the power but the south get affected very badly from their decisions. I think it also represents the racism that there is in the south that has tarnished the law structure which was helped everyone but is being ignored because it suits them better.
