The scene starts the king, Claudius asking Rosencrantz and Guildenstern whether they found the cause of Hamlets madness. They said they didn’t find the cause of his madness and informed them that Hamlet is happy that there is a play being put on tomorrow and that they should attend. Claudius and Polonius hide so that they can spy on Hamlet and his meeting with Ophelia, which was set up to see the cause of Hamlets madness. Hamlet talks about his thoughts of suicide and claims that he never gave her any gifts when she tries to give him some. Hamlet then goes on to deny ever loving Ophelia and belittles woman in general by telling Ophelia “Get thee to a nunnery”. Hamlet then leaves and Claudius and Polonius enter and Claudius believes that Hamlets madness doesn’t stem from his love of Ophelia but something more dangerous to Claudius, so he decides to send him to England to collect some money they owe Denmark.
