This scene starts with Polonius and Reynaldo making a deal for Reynaldo to spy on Leartes in Paris. Reynaldo is told to give Leartes some money, and to find out what he is doing and to tell Polonius. Polonius suggest that he should spread lies about how Leartes does these terrible deeds to get people to talk about what Leartes is actually doing “Your bait of falsehood takes this carp of truth”. Ophelia then enters and talks about how Hamlet had all of his clothes ripped up and grabbed her, then left. Polonius thinks that this means Hamlet has gone mad with love and that he made a mistake telling Ophelia to ignore his letters.
