Act 3, Scene 4

The scene starts with the Queen in her room with Polonius hiding behind the curtain, when Hamlet enters angrily and cause for his mother to scream. This causes Polonius to think the Queen its being attacked so shouts from behind the curtain, Hamlet hears this and stabs Polonius through the curtain. Hamlet is disgusted by his mothers relationship with his uncle saying that everything about her lust for him is horrible and that she should stop. His mother becomes worried about his sanity again. Hamlet regrets killing Polonius and refers to the kings decision to send him to England, he’s ready to go.

Act 3, Scene 3

The king prepares to send Hamlet to England, Polonius enters to tell him that Hamlet is talking to Gertrude to work out Hamlet’s madness. Polonius leaves and Claudius is left on his own, He then admits killing his brother “A brother’s murder. Pray can I not.” and attempts to pray but cannot as he can’t be forgiven for such a sin. Hamlet then enters the scene and has the chance to kill to Claudius but doesn’t as he thinks he has prayed meaning he won’t be punished in the afterlife. “A villain kills my father, and, for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.”

Act 3, Scene 2

The scene is just before the play where Hamlet is giving some advice to the actors of the play as to not be too over dramatic but make sure they show enough emotion. Hamlet tells Horatio that the play will re-enact the killing of his father and that he is testing Claudius’s guilt, Horatio agrees to look at Claudius’s reaction. The play, The Mousetrap, gets underway and when the murder scene happens, Claudius calls for lights out. Hamlet and Horatio are convinced that the king is guilty. Polonius enters and tells Hamlet that he should go speak with his mother.

Act 3, Scene 1

The scene starts the king, Claudius asking Rosencrantz and Guildenstern whether they found the cause of Hamlets madness. They said they didn’t find the cause of his madness and informed them that Hamlet is happy that there is a play being put on tomorrow and that they should attend. Claudius and Polonius hide so that they can spy on Hamlet and his meeting with Ophelia, which was set up to see the cause of Hamlets madness. Hamlet talks about his thoughts of suicide and claims that he never gave her any gifts when she tries to give him some. Hamlet then goes on to deny ever loving Ophelia and belittles woman in general by telling Ophelia “Get thee to a nunnery”. Hamlet then leaves and Claudius and Polonius enter and Claudius believes that Hamlets madness doesn’t stem from his love of Ophelia but something more dangerous to Claudius, so he decides to send him to England to collect some money they owe Denmark.

 

Act 2, Scene 2 Summary

The scene is within the castle and starts out with Claudius and Gertrude having Rosencrantz and Guildenstern over to talk about how Hamlet’s state of still worrying about his fathers death. The king and queen ask them to check on Hamlet and make sure he doesn’t become to sad. Voltemand then comes from Norway to bring a treaty to allow the Norwegian army and their king to pass through Denmark with safe passage. Claudius says this suits him well but isn’t too bothered and says he’ll look later. Polonius then enters the scene and reads a letter from Hamlet to Ophelia about his love to her. Polonius suggest that he will “loose his daughter to him”. Hamlet enters the scene and openly insults Polonius and starts to talk out of the iambic pentameter, showing that he is starting to go mad. Polonius talks to the audience about how Hamlet as “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t”. Polonius leaves the scene, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, where they having banter about life and Hamlet talks about how Denmark’s a prison. Hamlet talks in iambic pentameter again, showing he is not mad. He questions them why the have come and they tell him the truth that they were sent. News of actors coming distracts Hamlet and then he comes up with a plan to give the main actor a speech about how a king’s brother killed a king and have it performed in front of everyone tomorrow evening. Hamlet will be able to see the kings reaction to this and increase his knowledge on whether Claudius killed his father or not.

 

Act 2, Scene 1 Summary

This scene starts with Polonius and Reynaldo making a deal for Reynaldo to spy on Leartes in Paris. Reynaldo is told to give Leartes some money, and to find out what he is doing and to tell Polonius. Polonius suggest that he should spread lies about how Leartes does these terrible deeds to get people to talk about what Leartes is actually doing “Your bait of falsehood takes this carp of truth”. Ophelia then enters and talks about how Hamlet had all of his clothes ripped up and grabbed her, then left. Polonius thinks that this means Hamlet has gone mad with love and that he made a mistake telling Ophelia to ignore his letters.

Act 1, Scene 4 Summary

This scene is outside the castle walls where Horatio and Marcellus have a night watch. Hamlet joins them at midnight to try and see the ghost of his father. Hamlet does see the ghost of his father and wants to follow the ghost but Horatio and Marcellus says that he should stay “You shall not go, my lord”. Hamlet must know what the ghost has to say and goes with the ghost.

Act 1, Scene 3 Summary

This scene has the characters Laertes, his sister Ophelia and their father Polonius. The scene show Laertes saying good bye to Ophelia and says some advice to her to be careful about Hamlet. Polonius then gives advice to Ophelia to careful of Hamlet “When the blood burns, how prodigal the soul Lends the tongue vows” and that she shouldn’t make herself so readily available as he might not be as nice as he is seeming to be.

 

Act 1, Scene 2 Summary

This scene has Hamlet, Claudius and Gertrude, where Claudius makes a speech about how he mourns his brothers death but is happy about his recent marriage to his brothers wife. Hamlet is disgusted by this as it was only a month since his father had died and now his uncle has already married his mother. Claudius thinks Hamlet should grow up and get over his fathers death and be happy about their marriage “Of impious stubbornness, ’tis unmanly grief”. Hamlet wants to go back to Wittenberg to study but Claudius and Gertrude don’t allow him.
